  • Issue with Superbeam load selection

    Hi,

I am new to Superbeam and Pro steel so my apologises if there is a simple solution to this, but I can't seem to alter the type of load (circled in red below).

Initially before I 'broke' the program I was able to alternate between D/L etc but now that section is not selectable. I have tried uninstalling the software and trying again but with no luck. I would like to add that I did accidentally opened a Pro steel file in Superbeam which I believe might have contributed to this issue, not entirely sure.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Paul

What has happened is the program is defaulting to total load input I think

if you go to project in the drop down menu at the top and then select project details from the list this brings up a dialog box look in the centre left hand side ' load entry' and make sure that
separate dead and live loads is ticked - this is the same dialog box that you use to put in the site address etc

This will then allow you to use dead and live loads in the design

    hope this helps

      Brillant, Thank you very much!

That has done the trick. Not quite sure how I managed to do that initially but I can assume once I reinstalled the software it then made that setting default.

      Very much appreciated.

        Hi Paul

on my copy of superbeam the default is total load input - this is because the design code(BS449) is not a limit state code and does not factor the dead and live loads
but instead decreases the allowable stresses in timber and steel to a working stress rather than prosteel which is a limit state code so the loads are factored by
1.4 dead and 1.6 live then uses a higher steel stress

you would separate the loads in superbeam so that timber reactions are split which is what you need for the design of steel in prosteel

As the first thing I do in either superbeam or prosteel is the project information I can set this at the start of the project in superbeam if you change it part way through a
design the loads would default to live loads and you would then need to go back and recheck loads so make sure you decide which you want at the start of the design

        hope this helps

        regards

In the forthcoming SuperBeam Plus (yes, I know it's long overdue) the option to enter total loads will be removed so I'd suggest selecting separate dead+live loads for all new projects in case you find yourself wanting to load them into the new program. Another change to note from the current SuperBeam and EuroBeam programs is the removal of the combined steel/timber beam type. If you want to calculate steel and timber alternatives enter them as two separate beams, one of each type.
